Arch Street Residences

The Original Home & Studio of
William Wendt

The first phase of this project is the restoration and expansion of artist William Wendt’s home and Studio. William Wendt and his wife Julia settled in Laguna Beach and built their home and studio in 1918. The location was chosen because the land around it inspired him to get outside and paint “plein air” – a technique that made one of the turn of the century’s most renowned artists. With panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean in front of the studio, Wendt was able to thrive as an artist. Settling in Laguna Beach enabled him to develop his personal style of painting for which he is world renowned.

The second phase of the project was to develop 2 new historically inspired residences on the R3 zoned property. A twofold approach was undertaken. The first design created 2 new historically inspired cottage homes. The second design relocated two existing historic cottages slated for demolition to the site. These would then be restored and expanded. The project required numerous approvals and extensive public review and comment periods. Ultimately the project utilizing the historic cottages was approved by the Laguna Beach Heritage Committee, Planning Commission and the Laguna Beach City Council.
